ADK Cycle Outing 2024 will be based out of Wadhams Hall near Ogdensburg, NY. Wadhams Hall provides a convenient base to explore both sides of the St. Lawrence River from its Lake Ontario source through the Thousand Islands and down to the Eisenhower Locks and Moses-Saunders hydropower dam.

Many of the outing routes are described in the ADK e-book “Cycling Routes of the Saint Lawrence River Valley and Northern Adirondacks” by Tom Ortmeyer and John Barron. A complimentary copy of the guide will be provided to first-time ADK Cycle Outing Participants.
Routes in the book range from around 20 miles to 50 and more–some trips focus strictly on cycling, while others rides have time for relaxing and sightseeing in addition to riding. Many rides focus on the quiet town roads in lightly populated areas or paved bicycle paths, with some portions on the broad paved shoulders of main highways. Several rides are across the river in southeastern Ontario (a passport or enhanced license is required for these).

There will typically be featured short and long trips each day, led by an outing leader.  Shorter trips tend to be 20-30 miles, and long trips tend to be of 30 to 50 miles. Cue sheets and maps will be provided for all rides. For some rides, a link to a GPS ride map will be available. Participants may also choose to head out on their own or in a small group.

Cycle Outing 2024 is based at Wadhams Hall, 6866 State Highway 37; Ogdensburg, NY. Some bicycling trips will depart directly from campus, others require a short drive to the departure point. We will gather in the lounge in late afternoon, to socialize, and then discuss the day’s rides, and plan a trip or trips for the next day. Wadhams Hall is about 2 miles upstream from Ogdensburg and provides convenient access to the Thousand Islands as well as the Ogdensburg Prescott International Bridge.

Wadhams Hall has many places to gather and meet as a group. There is internet access. They also own over 1000 feet of riverfront on the St. Lawrence River across Rte. 37 from the Hall, for our group to take advantage of. There is room to store bicycles indoors. Wadhams Hall is not air-conditioned. This should not be a factor with the outing being in mid-June and having the St. Lawrence River nearby.

  • Lodging: Wadhams Hall offers two lodging options—dorm rooms and suites. Suites have a bedroom with either a queen bed, king bed, or two twin beds. They have a separate sitting room, and a bathroom with shower. Dorm rooms have two single beds, with men’s and women’s bathrooms and shower rooms down the hall.
  • Bedding: Bedding, blankets, and towels are provided.
  • Dining: Morning coffee, milk and tea are included in Cycle Outing Registration, along with a welcome picnic scheduled for Monday June 10. Other meals are not included in the registration. Participants are welcome to bring food as they wish. Wadhams Hall has a sink, coffee maker, toaster and microwave available for our use.  There is also a limited amount of refrigerator/freezer space available.  You are welcome to bring an ice chest for your room. Blue freezer packs can be refrozen daily. There is some cookware, plates, etc. available, but you may want to bring some of your own as well.
There are plenty of places to eat nearby. Most nights, we will organize a group dinner at a nearby restaurant for those interested.
Participants are responsible for providing bicycles, helmets (helmets are required on all rides) and transportation of the bikes. You may bring an E-bike (note that NY and Ontario laws differ on E-bikes). All bicycles will need bells and reflectors in Ontario.
