The Winter Survival 1-Day Workshop is an introductory program for those looking to begin or expand their recreational activities in the winter season. Our goals are to help you build a foundation of outdoor skills and refine your gear preparation to meet the demanding conditions of winter. Parking is included for program participants. We will spend the day learning about a litany of topics: proper clothing & equipment, backcountry preparedness & safety considerations, nutrition, tips to stay warm & dry, how to recognize & treat cold weather illnesses, backcountry winter travel, snowshoeing basics, avalanche awareness, shelter building, and discuss Leave No Trace backcountry skills & ethics for winter.
Time will be spent in both the classroom and in the outdoors. While the classroom yurt is heated (65 degrees Fahrenheit), bringing a dry set of clothing for the Yurt Village could be helpful. Come prepared for wintery conditions. This program will be led by one or more of ADK’s Education Department staff.
Good physical condition, proper winter clothing, and proper equipment are a must.
