Naturalist Winter Hike Series
Want to build up your winter hiking skills while simultaneously learning about the winter wonderland that is the Adirondacks? Look no further! Join an ADK guide and naturalist on this three-session series where we will hone snowshoeing skills and delve into various seasonal natural science topics. Each session will involve a mini naturalist lesson and winter hike. Snowshoes are available to participants as part of the program.
In session 1, learn about what different Adirondack animals do to prepare for and survive winter. Then, get geared up for an introductory snowshoe hike around Heart Lake and look for signs of animal activity along the way.
In session 2, dive into dormancy and the lives of plants in winter. Next, set off to climb Mt Jo observing plant life (or the lack thereof) on the mountain.
In session 3, meet at Hurricane Mountain for the final and largest winter hike of the series. Reflect on and discuss winter recreation including the principles of Leave No Trace and what winter recreation in the Adirondacks looks like with changing winter conditions.
